New Sonographer Joins Mercy Health Love County Imaging Services
The popular ultrasound service at Mercy Health Love County has added a new technologist.
She is Jami Buhrmester, associate sonographer, who began operating the hospital’s Phillips Affiniti 70 Ultrasound System on March 30, 2026.
“I’ve been busy from day one and I like it here,” said Buhrmester. With 25 years of experience in the field, the friendly technologist is deep in knowledge and compassion.
An ultrasound (or sonogram) scanner uses sound waves instead of radiation to create images of organs and structures inside the body.
The test is used most often to evaluate liver, gall bladder, pancreas, kidneys, and carotid arteries in the neck. “An ultrasound is the easiest and least invasive of procedures for the patient,” Buhrmester said.
But scanning calls for precision and detail on the part of the technician. “I find myself going back over areas to be sure I am thorough and obtaining the highest image quality the machine can produce.”
The ultrasound scan begins with the application of gel to the part of the body under study. The technician then sweeps a probe, called a transducer back and forth over the skin.
The transducer sends high-frequency sound waves and records the waves that echo back from internal organs, fluids, and tissues.
The waves are measured and displayed by a computer, which also displays the resulting image on a monitor. The collected images are transmitted electronically to be seen and interpreted by a specialist doctor.
During the typical 30-minute scan, Buhrmester makes sure the patient is comfortable and understands the test. “The proof for me was having a 12-year-old girl tell me she had been scared to death of ultrasound but felt relaxed by the end of the scan.”
General ultrasound exams take place Monday through Thursday in the Therapy Building on referral from a clinic physician or any other provider. Patients can call 580-300-3254 with any questions.
A wide range of tests is available, including abdominal aorta, abdomen, arterial upper or lower, carotid, renal artery, right upper quadrant (RUQ), scrotal, soft tissue, vascular, and venous upper and lower.
Echocardiograms are offered on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Burhrmester has a robust life with her family outside of work. On their farm north of Sulphur, they enjoy horses and rodeo sports. “I have been a barrel racer and my daughter, Dannah, is 16 and into breakaway roping. My husband, Jared, owns Custom Bits and Spurs and takes orders from the public.”
She started her career as a veterinary technician in Florida but in 1999, seeking more opportunity, switched to her current field. She has practiced in Louisiana and Oklahoma.
Buhrmester is due to graduate in October from Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City with a bachelor’s degree in health care administration. She holds the RDMS credential in sonography.
